Joy To The World – And Your Apartment

One of the pleasures of living in High Rise Society are the markets that pop up around the holidays where you can buy presents from afar while staying close to home.  I know it’s better to give than receive, but there’s nothing wrong with getting yourself — or better yet your apartment – something special to celebrate the season.

There are treasures, quirky and beautiful, multicultural and quintessentially New York — that won’t break a recessionary budget – to be found at the holiday fairs (See: More). And now you can eat while you shop, thanks to purveyors dishing up everything from Belgian waffles to French crepes. I spent a few hours wandering through the red and white tented stalls set up in Union Square.  Here are a few of my favorite finds.

X-mas Fair, Union Square-5ZENgarage:  Offers a unique assortment of hand embroidered cotton and silk Suzanis from Central Asia, and appliquéd and embroidered hangings from Gujarat and other exotic places.  Prefer to sit on, rather than look at, these spectacular designs? There are ottomans and cushions blending vintage and contemporary textiles from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and India.  And for those who can’t resist something personal, treat yourself to one of the handbags fashioned out of fabrics from around the world.  For even more, visit them online

Karma Living:  You can’t help but feel good surrounding your apartment with the handcrafted pillows and parasols,X-mas Fair, Union Square-3 bedspreads and hangings in patterns as vibrant as the Indian landscape.  If you want to brighten your rooms still more, then add a few of the fabric-draped hanging lamps  And while you’re at it, why not get a kurta in purple or red or orange, so you can be as colorful as your new décor.  You can also visit them online.

X-mas Fair, Union Square-7World Flavors:  What better way to end your shopping spree than to curl up in your favorite chair with a with a cup of tea made from rosebuds, or hibiscus or one of the other unique varieties offered up here in mounds so inviting you’ll never use those sanitary-wrapped flow through bags again.  There are also spices galore — from cinnamon to cardamom — so intoxicating you don’t have to bother cooking with them, but can just pour them into lacquer bowls and make your apartment smell delicious.

Thank you for directing me to this wonderful fair. My apartment is brighter and more interesting. In addition I found other worthy vendors. Please print some more suggestions for design around the city.
