About Me

Sylvia PhotoSylvia Shapiro is a lifelong New Yorker and long-time resident of High Rise Society.  She became an expert in spite of herself when her building was converted from rental to cooperative status and she wound up President of the Board.  Although a lawyer, she didn’t have a clue how to run a multi-million dollar real estate enterprise, and had to figure out the rules the hard way.  Hoping to spare others a similar fate, she wrote The New York Co-op Bible (good for condos, too) to arm you with the legal and practical know how you need to help buy, sell, and live smart.  Now in its second edition, The Bible has become the standard in its field.

The author and her book have been featured in The New York Times, The New York Law Journal, and Booklist, among others. Sylvia has preached the gospel of her Bible on many radio and TV programs, including Good Day, New York, Eyewitness News, The Joan Hamburg Show, The Brian Lehrer Show, to name a few.  She has lectured and written extensively on the subject, including for The National Law Journal, The NY Law Journal, Habitat Magazine, The Cooperator, and Real Estate Law Reporter, and most recently was called upon to assist a foreign government in developing a new housing model for the Twenty-First Century.  She even has been known to make emergency house calls to buildings in distress.

Aside from making her an accidental expert (and maybe a masochist), serving on her building’s board for more then fifteen years has given Sylvia an insider’s grasp of the realpolitik of ever-changing life in High Rise Society, which she hopes here to share with you as well as to hear what you have to say.  She is currently at work on a novel set – where else – in High Rise Society.
